Most and Least Racially Diverse US Colleges and Universities
There are many factors that students use when choosing a dream college.
For some, it is important to have an urban campus; for some, the proximity to home or the cost of attendance. And finally, some students want to be in a diverse environment.
All US universities have information about racial and ethnic diversity, but it is hard to find the data about all of them in one place.
When browsing data from College Insight I was able to extract the diversity information for all 4-year institutions. I had to clean and present it in a friendly format.
Source Data
Racial Groups
The data from College Insight is broken into several groups:
- American Indian or Alaskan Native
- Asian or Pacific Islander
- Black, non-Hispanic
- Hispanic undergraduates
- White, non-Hispanic
- Foreign/international
- Multiracial
- Race unknown
Diversity Score
To make it easier to evaluate the racial diversity of the student body quickly, I introduced Diversity Score. The diversity score is the percentage of the most dominant racial group in the college.
For example, if the student body of Harvard University is the following:
- American Indian or Alaskan Native: 0.00%
- Asian or Pacific Islander: 18.00%
- Black, non-Hispanic: 8.00%
- Hispanic undergraduates: 11.00%
- White, non-Hispanic: 41.00%
- Foreign/international: 12.00%
- Multiracial: 6.00%
- Race unknown: 3.00%
then the Harvard Diversity Score is 41.
The lower the diversity score, the more diverse the college is. The least diverse colleges have diversity scores of 100.
Data Cleanup
There was a fair amount of data cleanup done to make sure that the data presented below is meaningful. For instance, I had to remove institutions with Race Unknown share over 25% and those that did not have data at all.
Raw Data
Below you can find stats by states and some other conditions. You can also search for a particular college in this table. The column “” is student body breakdown by race (see Racial Groups above).
School | City | State | Diversity Score | American Indian _ Asian _ Black _ Hispanic _ White _ International _ Multiracial _ Race Unknown |
---|
Once I prepared the data, I discovered several interesting patterns.
Racial Diversity Breakdown in Public vs. Private Colleges
The first two statistics related to exploring inequality in the college body.
First, I assumed that certain minority groups would prefer public colleges over private ones since the former are usually cheaper.
When I plugged the dataset into analytics tools, I got the following chart:

According to the charts above, White students are more likely to attend public colleges and less likely to attend private for-profit.
In contrast, the percentage of Black students enrolling in for-profit universities is almost double that in public schools. Hispanic population follows a similar pattern.
The share of Asian students is the same across all three types, but international students either prefer or are being recruited more by private non-profit schools.
Racial Diversity Breakdown By College Cost
Another question I had was how the cost of the college impacts enrollment decisions. I analyzed the diversity breakdown by splitting schools into four groups:
- Colleges with tuition less than $10K
- Colleges with tuition between $10K and $25K
- Colleges with tuition between $25K and $50K
- Colleges with tuition over $50K

According to the charts above, American Indians mostly enrolled in colleges with tuition under $10K. The share of Black and Hispanic students is highest in colleges between $10K and 25K. The number of Asian and international students in the most expensive colleges is double that in less expensive colleges. White students seem to be distributed evenly in universities regardless of the tuition.
States With Most Diverse Colleges
The top 5 states with the most diverse colleges are Hawaii, Nevada, California, Arizona, and Texas. The states with the least diverse colleges are North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Mississippi, and Kentucky.
Below is a diversity heat map. The more diverse state is, the darker it appears on the map:

Conclusion
In conclusion, I’d like to caution you from making hasty conclusions only based on the numbers presented above. All numbers must be interpreted in the context.
For example, it is easy to decide that colleges in Maine are less diverse than colleges in South Carolina. However, keep in mind that most universities recruit from their home states, and Maine as a state is less diverse than South Carolina.
On the other hand, there are many institutions that serve certain minority groups, such as HBCS, HSIs, or colleges with religious affiliations and their diversity scores are high as a result of their missions. So, context is important.
